The Eighth Annual Autism Awareness: “Celebrate Individuality Art Show and Fun Day” was held on April 14, 2018 at the Okefenokee Heritage Center, and offered family friendly activities to all who attended.  Our weather was absolutely perfect, and made the day extremely enjoyable to everyone!  A special thanks to Donna McClain, Ware County’s Special Education Director for taking and sharing such wonderful photos which showcased all of the fun!

Congratulations to the people below and to all the folks who worked “behind the scenes” to make this year’s festival become a roaring success!

We had an outstanding attendance rating with a total of 735 people attending.  These attendees were area Administrators, Special Education and General Education Teachers, School Psychologists and Counselors, Paraprofessionals, Agencies and a phenomenal number of Parents (225), along with a staggering number of Students (350)!  Every year we are continually amazed at the huge turnouts to this event and this year’s event marked the largest number of attendees to date!  A big “Thank you” goes to everyone who came in droves to support our kids.  We couldn’t do this without you!

Attractions included a Bounce House, Big Slide, Knobby the Autism Train, a Sensory Sand Pit, Go Fish, Face Painting, just to name a few!  Food and drink was provided at no charge from the generous donations from Brantley County, McDonald’s, Hardee’s, Coca Cola, Friendly Express and others.  Thank you to all donors for your giving hearts!

The Celebrate Individuality Art Show featured art from area students, colorfully displayed in the Okefenokee Heritage Center Warehouse.  We have so many talented students who participated in this effort, so as you can imagine, judging was a real challenge.  All of our entries deserve high praise for their accomplishments!  We absolutely loved and admired all of the entries!

Autism Awareness Billboard

South Central GLRS proudly serves as a co-sponsor of Autism Awareness initiatives in the Pierce -Ware region. Other partners are the Pierce and Ware County School Systems, The ARC of Satilla, Easter Seals of South Georgia, and the South Georgia Regional Aging and Disability Resource Connection.

One exciting accomplishment of this team is the erection of a billboard beside a major thoroughfare in Waycross. This billboard promotes awareness of Autism in our region and supports children and families whose lives are touched by Autism. It is our hope that all in our community will develop an understanding of what can be done to educate and advocate for children and youth with Autism.
